May 8, 1942 – January 5, 2019
West Berlin – Loving husband and best friend of Patricia F. Hobbs, passed away on January 5, 2019 after a lengthy battle with cancer. He leaves behind his children Albert C. Hobbs, Jr. and daughter Dr. Jennifer A. Hobbs and his grandchildren Benjamin P. Szabo and Lily A. Szabo. Al was a 1964 graduate of Glassboro State College and proudly served our country in the U.S. Army. From there he went on to become the timpanist at West Point Military Academy Band, West Point, New York and the NCO in charge of the Cadet Band. He then followed his dream and became the timpanist with the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra, also performing with the St. Louis Percussion Ensemble and was an adjunct at the University of Missouri. Returning to NJ, Al was the timpanist with the Reading Symphony, Lancaster Symphony and Trenton Symphony.
He taught in the Deptford Township School system for 34 years as teacher of Music, Percussion Ensembles and Stage Band. He was the District Music Coordinator, Fine and Performing Arts Department Head and President of the Deptford Township D.E.A. for two years. He was Teacher of the Year in 1989. Al began and served as Musical Director/Producer of the school's annual musicals for 18 years. During this period he also performed and recorded with to name a few: Steven Sondheim, Ray Charles, Frankie Vallie & The Four Seasons, Mel Torme, George Shearing, Marian McParland, John Faddus and many more. Some of his most beloved playing was done at the Haddonfield United Methodist Church with the NJ Master Chorale with the Philadelphia Orchestra & Friends as the timpanist for 20 years.
In his spare time he was a volunteer fireman, serving as 2 nd Assistant Chief for the West Berlin Fire Company and was named Fireman of the Year. Most important was his kindness, humility and love for his family and his cherished dog "Emma". He will be missed with every breath his family takes.
Relatives and Friends are invited to his visitation on Saturday, January 12, 2019 from 9 – 10:45 AM at Haddonfield United Methodist Church, 29 Warwick Rd, Haddonfield, NJ 0803, followed by his funeral service at 11 AM. Interment will be private in Arlington National Cemetery, in Virginia at a later date.
