"Lefty" Gaines
April 23, 1935 – May 13, 2023
On May 13, 2023, in Sicklerville, NJ, due to failing health, Edward E. Gaines, well known as "Lefty" closed his eyes and went to sleep. Born in Philadelphia, PA. he was the son of the late, William "Sonny" and Lillian Rebecca (Anderson) Gaines. In the 1950's, Lefty and his parents moved to Wildwood, NJ, where he married his childhood sweetheart, Roberta E. Hamilton. The couple were blessed with 10 children.
Lefty is survived by his beloved wife of 65 years, Roberta Gaines; loving daughters, Edna Molina (Angel), Willa Mae Booker, Melody Matthews (Larry), Lillian Harrison, and Sheila Watkins (Harold); sons, Edward "Lil Lefty" Gaines, Michael Gaines (Monique), Warren "Butchie" Gaines (Martha), Eric Gaines. He is also survived by his brother, Michael Gaines (Mercedes) of Virginia; 28 grandchildren; 30 plus great-grandchildren, 1 great great-grandchild, and a host of other relatives and friends. Lefty was pre-deceased by his daughter, Candis E. Gaines.
Lefty by trade worked as a masonry truck driver. He worked for the city of Wildwood for 10 years before being hired as a cement truck driver by Rio Grande Building Materials where he retired after 30 years of service. Lefty frequently attended Christ Gospel Church in Whitesboro, NJ. He was a family oriented and spent time traveling and visiting family and friends in Philadelphia, Mt. Holly, Willingboro and Virginia. He had an insatiable taste for different cuisines and enjoyed frequenting different restaurants. He was devoted Philadelphia Eagles fan and an awesome billiards player. Lefty was a member of the Greater Wildwood Grand Lodge #34, BPO of Reindeers in Wildwood, Elks of Wildwood and President of the Bulldogs Organization out of Cape May County, NJ.
A Memorial Service for Lefty will be celebrated on Saturday, June 3 rd at 1:00 pm in the McCann-Healey Funeral Home, 851 Monmouth Street, Gloucester City, NJ where family and friends may visit for 12 to 1:00 pm. Burial will be held at a later date privately.
