IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Elizabeth Olga
Sturgis
February 20, 2024
On February 20, 2024, at the age of 89, Elizabeth passed away peacefully at her daughter's home in Brookhaven, PA surrounded by her family. Elizabeth was born in Philadelphia, PA. She was the daughter of the late James and Mary (Oresick) Bronsky. Many knew Elizabeth as "Betty." She was a former resident of Gloucester City, and longtime resident of Westville, NJ.
After the early passing of her parents, Elizabeth and her brothers went to live with family friends, Aunt Margaret and Uncle Pete on their farm in New Sharon, NJ. She graduated from Woodbury High school in 1951 with honors. She met George Sturgis at the Gloucester Dance; they fell in love and were later married in 1954 at St. Mary's Church in Gloucester, NJ.
As the family grew, they shared many happy times during the holidays around the dinner table. Many hours of laughter were heard as they played board games after a delicious meal. She was a great cook. She loved to share her Russian/Ukrainian heritage by making homemade perogies and stuffed cabbage rolls. Making them on New Year's Day was a cherished family event. Everyone loved her famous Jewish Apple Cake.
In addition to raising a family, Elizabeth had various part-time jobs doing clerical work at RCA, Campbell Soup, Sears and Roebuck, and Grant's. After her youngest son graduated from high school, she went full-time as the customer service manager at Bradlees (formally Jefferson Ward) where she worked until they closed the doors. She retired in 2009 after 10 years in customer service at Target in Deptford, NJ. She was known to bake cakes for the staff, and everyone loved her smile and positive attitude.
Elizabeth loved to have fun and was very adventurous. She traveled to Colorado, New Mexico and California to visit her daughters. She went camping and hiked to the Arches in Utah.
Elizabeth was predeceased by her beloved husband of 61 years, George H. Sturgis, Jr. and daughter, Beth Sturgis. She is survived by her children, Diane Wieland (Paul), Margie Runquist (Jeff), Daniel "Dan" Sturgis (Carol), and George H. Sturgis, III (Michelle); her cherished grandchildren, George W. Parkin IV (Megan), Dan Sturgis, Aaron Sturgis and Nicole Merideth (Austin); great grandchildren, Amber and Sydney Parkin; stepbrother, Robert "Bobbie" Kline (Lorraine); sister-in-law, Gail (Tommy) Bronsky and many nieces and nephews. She was also predeceased by her sisters, Dorothy and Helen; brothers, John, Jimmy, Tommy, and Daniel; sister-in-law, Anna Marie "Ann" Sturgis and brother-in-law, Harry Sturgis, Sr. She is remembered as a devoted mother and matriarch.
Relatives and friends are invited to her visitation from 11 am to 1pm on Thursday, April 11th at the McCann-Healey Funeral Home, 851 Monmouth Street, Gloucester City, where funeral services will be celebrated at 1 pm.
