On July 11, 2015, Age 95, a long-time resident of Gloucester City, passed away peacefully at Heath Village, Hackettstown, N.J. Helen was born on Jan. 20, 1920 at home in Gloucester City to the late Herman O. Stainker and Charlotte M. (Manduka) Stainker. She was married to Donald Brown for over forty years prior to his passing in 1980. She was also predeceased by 6 siblings; Herman (Harry), William, Earl, Franklin, Charlotte (Marie) and John as well as one Grandson, Harry E. Brown, Jr. Helen is survived by her sons, Donald D. Brown (Naree K.) and Harry E. Brown (Nancy M.) as well as 5 Grandchildren; Donald (Marc) Brown, Heather L. Durr (Kenneth L.), Peter D. Brown (Elizabeth C.), Nancy (Beth) Viglianco (Michael C. ) and Rebecca N. Brown. She is also survived by 7 Great-Grandchildren; Benjamin Durr, Andrew Durr, Madeline Durr, Peter (PJ) Brown, Noah Brown, Sarah Viglianco, and Samuel Viglianco. Mrs. Brown retired as a Head Salesperson from JC Penney Co. in 1983. She was previously employed by Pauley's Bakery in Gloucester City as well as other positions locally. She was a lifetime member of the Episcopal Church of the Ascension, Gloucester City, a member and Past President of the Broadway School PTA, and member of both the Monmouth St. and Gloucester City Jr./Sr. High School PTA. She was a life member of the Gloucester City Historical Society. Helen was also a member of the German-American Society of South Jersey and the Ancora Psychiatric Hospital Auxiliary, her dedication to which earned her a Citation from Former Governor Jon Corzine several years ago. Since WWII until she became too old to safely do so, Helen regularly donated blood (a rare type) and frequently donated to a host of charities too numerous to mention. Mrs. Brown was very popular with the young men who used Pauley's Bakery as their hang-out'. So much so they gave her the gang nickname' of Herbie so she could be a member. She was also famous with the young people in the city for serving hot dogs and soda on Halloween instead of the usual candy. Starting in the late 1950s and continuing into the early 60s the crowds eventually became overwhelming. Relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend her visitation on Monday, July 20 from 10 am to 11 am at the Episcopal Church of the Ascension: 110 South Sussex Street, Gloucester City, NJ 08030. Memorial Service 11 am in the church. Inurnment with Rite of Committal private at Eglington Cemetery, Clarksboro with her late husband, Donald.
