IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Jacqueline "Jackie"
Marie Trakimas
October 25, 1961 – March 12, 2025
Rio Grande, NJ and formerly of Deptford and Brooklawn - Passed peacefully at home surrounded by loved ones on March 12, 2025, at the age of 63, after a quiet battle with cancer. Formerly of Deptford, NJ. Beloved wife of 40 years of Joseph F. Trakimas. Cherished sister of Debbie Holick (Michael), Harry Carney, Jr. (Monique), and Thomas Carney (Kim), sister-in-law, aunt, friend, teacher, coach, and mentor.
Born in Philadelphia to the late Harry J. Carney, Sr. and the late Eleanor A. Carney on October 25, 1961, and largely raised in Brooklawn, NJ, Jackie graduated from Gloucester High School and Glassboro State College. She spent her professional career teaching high school math and health/physical education, most recently at Triton Regional High School, and she was a beloved high school and college coach. She coached multiple sports--ranging from lacrosse to field hockey--around South Jersey, but she was best known for basketball. "Trak" began her storied basketball coaching career at Bishop Eustace Prep in 1984, followed by head positions at Salem County College (where she started their women's basketball program), her alma mater Gloucester High, Rutgers University-Camden (where she led the school's 2003 Hall of Fame team to an NJ Athletic Conference title), and West Deptford High School. She made history in 2004 when she became the first woman to lead a high school boys' basketball team in the area, landing the head coach job at Lindenwold High; she was inducted into the South Jersey Basketball Hall of Fame that year.
She was a proud Parrothead, so you could usually find her sitting out in the sunshine, listening to Jimmy Buffett with a cold Coors Light in hand. She loved Philadelphia sports, screaming at televised basketball games (especially if Caitlin Clark was playing), happy hours and open bars, all-inclusive vacations, live music, finding a good deal when shopping, spoiling all the kids in her life, and just being with her husband and friends. She enjoyed life wholeheartedly, and never sweated the small stuff. We all have Jackie stories that'll make us laugh for years to come; she was a character and there's no one else quite like her.
Relatives, former students, players and friends are invited to Jackie's visitation on Thursday, March 27, 2025 from 11:30 am to 1:45 pm at St. Mary's Church: 426 Monmouth Street, Gloucester City, NJ 08030. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 2 pm. Cremation private and Inurnment will be at a later date.
In true Jackie fashion, please feel free to wear Jimmy Buffett gear or tropical resort wear; she'd rather have been at the beach, as you well know.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Jackie's name can be made payable to Helping Hands Fund at Thomas Jefferson Hospital. Please make checks payable to "Jefferson" and mail to: Jefferson, Office of Institutional Advancement Department 825434, P.O. Box 71331, Philadelphia, PA 19176-1331.
