Obituary

In the early morning of July 10th, 2023, Joanne C. Brophy passed away peacefully and was reunited with her late son, John Anthony Brophy. JoAnne of Gloucester City was 59 years old at the time of her passing, surrounded by family and staff at the Hospital of University of Pennsylvania, who provided excellent care for many years. JoAnne is the treasured wife of 38 years to Jay F. Brophy. Cherished daughter of Veronica Kent (nee Dooley) the late Robert Kent (surviving step-mother Dorothy). Adored mother of Jay F. Brophy (Megan Murphy), the late John A. Brophy, and Shane P. Brophy (Alyssa Smith). Devoted grandmother to her beloved Layla Marie Brophy, Madison, Mychael and Mason Hatton. Loving sister to Barbara Lacovara (John), Nancy Liberto (Salvatore), Kelly Thorn (Mark), and Kathy Franceschini (Vincent). Survived by many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, and nephews.

JoAnne was born in Camden and was a lifelong resident of Brooklawn, Gloucester City. She excelled in field hockey and was a lifelong cheerleader. JoAnne graduated from Gloucester High School in 1982, marrying her high school sweetheart, Jay, in 1985. She loved spending summers in North Wildwood with her family and friends. A day on the beach must include her favorite drink Diet Green Tea! Her pride and joy was her family: especially spoiling her grandchildren and her grandpuppies.

JoAnne worked in the Camden County Health Department before her medical retirement at the age of 49 following a diagnosis of lung cancer. For nine years, JoAnne fought recurrences of the disease, astounding and surpassing the expectations of her doctors at the University of Pennsylvania. JoAnne was tough. Her will to survive is a true testament to human beings ability to persist through adversity. Even more impressive still, despite these challenges, JoAnne never failed to bring joy to others. JoAnne is remembered for her endless generosity, fierce protectiveness of her loved ones, and undying loyalty to all who were lucky enough to know her. The title, "Saint JoAnne", does not begin to describe the extraordinary impact JoAnne has had on so many. In the final years of her life, JoAnne enjoyed precious summers with her granddaughter and children at her happy place, Wildwood, NJ.
