Surrounded by his loving family on August 5, 2017, age 63. Of Gloucester City. Born on September 23, 1953 in Gloucester City to the late James J. King, Sr. and Rita DiAngelo King. Loving father of Lisa King-Lund (James), Lauren Salvato (Brian) and Samantha King. Cherished grandfather of Tyler, Jordan, Joseph, Tristan, James and Logan. Beloved brother of Thomas, Helen Ann, Elena, Rita Jean, Ronald and Charlene. Predeceased by his sister Marie and brothers, James Jr. and Robert. Also survived by many loving nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts, uncles and friends.
Joe was a graduate of Gloucester City High School class of 1972, where he excelled in football and baseball. He was a member of the 1971 Hall of Fame for the Lions Baseball Team and had been scouted by the Minnesota Twins and Kansas City Royals. Joe received his Associates degree from Atlantic Cape Community College in Hotel Management and Culinary Arts. He spent most of his professional career in sales having worked in the Insurance, Furniture, Appliances and Advertisement industries. Joe was most recently the owner and operator of King's Music on Passyunk Ave. in Philadelphia.
Joe was a Philadelphia Mummer for 51 years and was a member of Durning, Garden State, Ferko, Woodland, Quaker City, Trilby and most recently, South Philadelphia. He was a professional banjoist, drummer, bass and guitar player and also taught those instruments to many over the years. Joe was a Hall of Fame Member of the Philadelphia Mummers String Band Division and the Drill and Show Director, Captain and President Coordinator of Mummers All Star Recordings.
Relatives and friends are invited to his viewings on Thursday evening, August 10th, from 5 to 8 PM and again on Friday morning, August 11th, from 9:30 to 10:30 AM at St. Mary's R.C. Church, 426 Monmouth St., Gloucester City. Mass of Christian Burial 11 AM in the church. Interment New St. Mary's Cemetery, Bellmawr.
