Obituary

Judy Lawrence (nee Butler) passed away on February 15, 2014. Judy was born in Gloucester City, NJ to Ethel and John Butler. She attended Gloucester Catholic High School (class of 1961) where, as a member of the Drum and Bugle Corp, she performed at the Presidential Inauguration of John F. Kennedy. She was also a member of her high school Glee Club. Judy married Henry Hank Lawrence in 1962, and they went on to raise three children together. Judy became an avid homemaker, developing her now legendary cooking and baking skills during their 46 years of marriage (Hank would pass away in 2008). It was with these skills that Judy often expressed her love and concern for others by providing meals for seniors, and those who were sick or struggling. She put her love into the many birthday, wedding, and shower cakes she baked for her own family as well as her extended family and friends. Judy also shared her love of music with her family, singing to her children, accompanying her son, a guitarist, or using the skills she learned in Glee Club to teach her children, nieces and nephews how to harmonize with each other. Judy had a fondness for old fashioned living (and Christmas!), and her home was a haven of warmth and comfort to those who visited. She always said Irish walls expand and many a family meal would find chairs being added around the kitchen table for unexpected guests who knocked on the door while her family was eating. Judy was a kind, caring woman who was willing to help anyone in need. She opened her home to those who needed a roof over their head, and provided a cup of coffee and an ear to those in need of companionship and someone to listen. A deeply religious woman, Judy spent part of each day in prayer, and always offered prayers for those who asked to be added to her prayer list. She was known to many younger family members and friends as Aunt Jute, and many of these thought of her as a second mother"because she treated them, and many others as if they were her own children. Judy made this earth a better place because of all the love she left behind with those who were blessed to have known her or to have ever crossed her path. Judy was a longtime parishioner of Saint Marys R.C. Church in Gloucester City. Judy was the beloved mother of her son Hank (Linda) Lawrence Jr. of Philadelphia, daughter Colleen Harris of Dover Delaware, and daughter Michelle (Jeff) Holmes of Collingswood, NJ. She was the devoted Grandmother of Rebecca, Jennifer, and Spencer. She is also survived by her brother John (Jeannette) Butler of Berlin, NJ as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins. Relatives and friends are invited to her visitation on Saturday, Feb. 22, 2014 from 10 to 11 AM at St. Marys R.C. Church: 426 Monmouth St., Gloucester City. Mass of Christian Burial 11 AM in the church. Inurnment will follow with her late husband, Hank in New Saint Marys Cemetery, Bellmawr.
