Mary Ellen O'Connell, 101, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, February 26, 2020 at St. Mary's Nursing Home, Cherry Hill, NJ, with her devoted cousin, Helen O'Malley, by her side. Mary was born January 17, 1919 at the family residence on Broad Street in Paulsboro, NJ. Mary lived in Paulsboro for many years before moving to the Lakebridge community in Woodbury prior to moving to St. Mary's.
Mary graduated from Paulsboro High School, Class of 1937. She was employed by Atlantic City Electric Co for 40 years, first in the Paulsboro office then Pitman and ultimately the Pleasantville office. Mary enjoyed bowling and golf for many years. She was an excellent seamstress, tailor and baker. Mary had many friends with whom she traveled and a Manhattan was her drink of choice. In addition, Mary was a devout Catholic who was a member of St. John the Evangelist Church in Paulsboro and St. Patrick Church of Woodbury.
Mary was a first generation American as her Mother, Helen (McGarry) and her Father, Michael O'Connell both arrived in the USA in the early 1900's from the Republic of Ireland. Mary was predeceased by her parents and her longtime companion, Tom O'Shaughnessy. She is survived by numerous O'Malley and O'Connell cousins, and her good friend Msgr. Gallagher.
Relatives and friends are invited to her Mass of Christian Burial which will be celebrated at St. Mary's Church, 426 Monmouth Street, Gloucester City, on Saturday, February 29, 2020 at 10 AM. Mary's cousin, Rev. Vincent O'Malley, C.M. will officiate. Burial will follow in St. Joseph's Cemetery, Swedesboro.
