Obituary

William Louis Kopec, "Bill", 87, passed away peacefully on May 12, 2021 surrounded by loved ones. Born in Philadelphia, PA, Bill grew up in Camden, NJ and was a long-time resident of Medford Lakes, NJ.

Bill graduated from Camden Catholic High and later Lasalle University. After college, he proudly served as a Major in the Marine Corps and spent 18 formative months in Okinawa. Bill worked for many years as one of the top salesmen for the Xerox Corporation and later went on to sell commercial real estate with Jackson and Cross. He also served as an adjunct professor at University of Pennsylvania where he taught marketing at the Wharton School of Business. On weekends, Bill drove back and forth from Wildwood Crest where he ran Lavender Hall, an assisted living facility in Wildwood Crest, NJ started by his late mother, Frances Kopec.

Bill is survived by his daughter, Renee Kopec (David Fernie), son Scott Kopec, grandson Oliver Fernie, his brother Frank Kopec, and many nieces, nephews, great nieces, and great nephews. He is predeceased by his sister Sandra Hebel and his parents Frances and Frank Kopec.

Bill was a very active individual - even late into his life - and was an avid handball player at the Camden YMCA for decades. He served on their board for many years and was awarded Man of the Year in 1974. He later became a member of Cherry Hill Racquet Club where he enjoyed playing racquetball into his early 80's.

Bill had many outside interests, but he especially loved modes of transportation. He was a car and bike enthusiast and dabbled in motorcycles and off-road vehicles. Bill was also quite fond of aquatic vessels. He was a member of the crew team in college, and later in life enjoyed canoeing near his home in Medford Lakes and sailing off the shores of Cape May, NJ. He also enjoyed shopping and frequently visited his daughter in NYC in order to spend time with her shopping for new pieces for his (already extensive) wardrobe. He appreciated fine craftsmanship and enjoyed collecting all kinds of beautiful objects.

To know Bill was to love him. He had an indomitable spirit and a wonderful sense of humor. He was a master story-teller who enjoyed socializing with people from all walks of life. His witty phrases and his love of others will live on through his family and friends.

Relatives and friends are invited to his viewing on Friday evening, May 14, 2021 from 5 to 7 PM at the McCANN-HEALEY FUNERAL HOME, 851 Monmouth St., Gloucester City.
